The Challenge
Hunger is one of the most pressing global issues, affecting millions of people every day. In the communities where we work, particularly in rural parts of Africa, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe, hunger is more than just a lack of food, it is a devastating cycle that traps families in poverty, prevents children from getting an education, and leads to long-term health complications.
In many regions, food insecurity stems from a combination of factors:
• Extreme Poverty: Families earn so little that they cannot afford basic necessities, and food is often the first thing to be sacrificed.
• Natural Disasters and Drought: In areas heavily reliant on subsistence farming, climate change and natural disasters like droughts or floods can wipe out entire food sources, leaving families with no safety net.
• Conflict and Political Instability: Regions affected by war or political turmoil experience disruptions in supply chains, making food scarce or unaffordable.
• Lack of Infrastructure: Poor roads, lack of storage facilities, and inefficient supply chains mean that even when food is available in some areas, it cannot be transported effectively to communities that need it.
These factors combined mean that families often go days without a proper meal, surviving on minimal rations that provide little to no nutritional value. Malnutrition, especially in children, results in stunted growth, weakened immune systems, and cognitive impairment, trapping generations in a cycle of poverty and poor health.
Why We Came to Work on It:
When Mehiel Foundation first began working in these communities, it was clear that hunger was one of the root causes holding families back from improving their lives. Without access to sufficient and nutritious food, children couldn’t focus on their education, parents couldn’t work effectively, and communities remained stuck in survival mode. We realized that addressing hunger was the first step in empowering these communities toward self-reliance and long-term development.
In response, we launched Sacks of Hope to directly combat food insecurity. By providing reliable access to food, we are not just addressing immediate hunger—we are giving families the chance to focus on building better futures for themselves.
Our Solution
Sacks of Hope was designed as a practical, immediate solution to the critical problem of hunger in these communities. Our goal is to ensure that families can rely on a steady supply of food, providing them with essential nutrition and the peace of mind needed to focus on other aspects of life, such as education, employment, and health.
Here’s how Sacks of Hope works:
• Food Sourcing: We partner with local farmers and suppliers whenever possible to source staple foods like rice, maize, beans, flour, and cooking oil. This not only supports local economies but also ensures that the food we distribute is familiar and suited to the dietary needs of the communities we serve.
• Efficient Distribution Networks: We work closely with local leaders, grassroots organisations, and volunteers to ensure that food reaches the most vulnerable families, quickly and directly. This grassroots model ensures that we don’t waste resources on complicated supply chains, and it allows us to respond swiftly in times of crisis.
• Food Security for the Long Term: Each sack is packed with enough food to sustain a family for several weeks, providing a temporary lifeline while we work toward longer-term solutions. These sacks contain nutritionally balanced staples that ensure families have enough calories and nutrients to stay healthy and active.
• Tailored Solutions: Recognising that every community is unique, we tailor the contents of the sacks based on local preferences and needs. This ensures that the food we distribute is both useful and culturally appropriate. In some communities, we provide additional items like seeds or tools to help families start small-scale farming operations.
• Empowerment Beyond Hunger Relief: Beyond simply delivering food, we aim to empower communities by educating them on nutrition and sustainable agriculture. In some regions, we work with local partners to teach families how to grow their own food through small-scale farming, giving them the tools they need to become self-sufficient.
Why This Works:
Our solution is both immediate and sustainable. The short-term benefit is clear—families receive the food they desperately need to survive. But the longer-term impact is just as important: by stabilising food security, we give families the breathing room to focus on education, economic opportunities, and community development. Hunger relief isn’t just about feeding people today—it’s about creating the conditions for long-term growth and self-sufficiency.
Sacks of Hope also emphasises dignity. Instead of waiting in long lines or relying on handouts, families receive the food they need in a respectful, efficient manner, which helps restore their sense of control and hope for the future.
Our Impact
Since its inception, Sacks of Hope has provided thousands of meals to families in need across countries like Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, Malawi, Zambia, Pakistan, India, Cambodia and UK. The project has brought immediate relief to thousands of children and adults suffering from food insecurity. Beyond immediate hunger relief, we are helping to stabilise communities by giving them the energy to focus on long-term solutions like education and employment.
Looking Ahead
We aim to expand Sacks of Hope to more countries and regions, reaching even more families in desperate need of food. With your support, we can continue to grow this life-saving initiative and explore sustainable solutions to hunger, such as community gardens and agricultural training programs that build long-term resilience.
